The city, a unique urban experiment, housed about 50,000 people in just 300 buildings, which were crammed together into a living space that followed its own set of laws. Governed by the Chinese mafia known as 'the Triads', the city became famous in the 1980s for its brothels, casinos and opium dens. Documentary filmed in 1988 about the Kowloon Walled City by an Austrian camera team, with English subtitles. I took it upon myself to re-sub the original video as best as possible, the original version is hard-subbed on a version of this film with very poor quality, the subs are also worded incorrectly in some places. So all I've done I re-subbed the whole thing and put it onto a better quality video clip.

This video is a short introduction to the MTR especially for those who haven't been to Hong Kong. I hope this video will guide you well if you are travelling to Hong Kong. Until it was demolished in 1993 Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong (Cantonese called it City of Darkness) was the most densely populated place on Earth. This is a video I took in 1990. As you can tell I wasn't very welcome. This article has some excellent pictures http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2139914/A-rare-insight-Kowloon-Walled-City.html Closed captions in this video: - The Walled City was a Chinese enclave surrounded by the British territory of Hong Kong. It was virtually ungoverned. - The 6.5 acres of 10-14 storey buildings was home to 33,000 people. 1 person per square metre. - Construction in the City was unregulated and 14 storey tower blocks were built just feet apart. - It was run by Triad gangs such as the 14K and Sun Yee On - It was one of the world's largest opiu...

The first part of the video is maybe more interesting as it's actually based in the walled city; on the tour with Ted Brown(the Aussie) and when interviewing the two girls, the other part is an interview with Jackie Pullinger. They do seem very keen on their work on helping druggies, but even I myself think they aren't very down to earth, Alan Wicker does well to keep the interviews going. Surely when he's interviewing the girl called Anne he asks her how she gets her food seeing as they don't earn any money as the work is ...

The offices of Commodore of the Dapeng Brigade and the Kowloon Assistant Military Inspectorate, commonly known as Yamen, were major buildings in the Walled City. When the British troops took over the Walled City in 1899, the Qing officials and soldiers were expelled. Since then, the Walled City had been deprived of the rule of law and administration. It became a semi-lawless squatter slum. During the Japanese occupation between 1941 and 1945, the walls of the Walled City were demolished by the Japanese troops, with the stones extracted for the extension of the nearby Kai Tak Airfield. The post-war years saw high-rise tenements over the Walled City. Built without government supervision, the living conditions deteriorated as the days went by. The Walled City had literally sunk into a hotbed of vice activities. Finally, the Walled City were brought to an end in 1987 when both governments of China and Hong Kong agreed on the demolition of the Walled City for ere-development into a park. The demolition works of the Walled City were completed in April 1994. During the demolition, some existing buildings, unearthed carved granite plaques, remnants and relics were protected intact.

The Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong was once the densest place on earth, a virtually lawless labyrinth of crime, grime, commerce and hope. A Wall Street Journal documentary tracks its colorful legacy and brings the place alive 20 years later. The city, a unique urban experiment, housed about 50,000 people in just 300 buildings, which were crammed together into a living space that followed its own set of laws. Governed by the Chinese mafia known as 'the Triads', the city became famous in the 1980s for its brothels, casinos and opium dens. Living conditions were squalid, with cramped and dirty spaces, no direct sunlight, patchy or non-existent electricity, and no garbage collection. Nevertheless, the city's population grew fivefold in just 40 years, from 10,000 after World War II, reaching 50,000 people by 1990. Rent was cheap, with an average of just HKD35 a month (about US$4 today) and no taxes were charged or paid. It was therefore very attractive for doctors and dentists and manufacturers who could practice without licenses, or people who could not afford to live elsewhere. The city's unique political status and anarchic conditions, however, made it an embarrassment for the British government, who after a difficult eviction process, started tearing it down in 1993. The demolition ended in April 1994. A year later, the place was transformed into a Qing Dynasty style garden. This animation recreates the historical process that lead to the creation of this fascinating city, and eventually to its disappearance. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.

Guide to Hong Kong's railway system called the Mass Transit Railway or well known as the MTR for getting around Hong Kong. MTR is Hong Kong's railway company since 2007. But before that, MTR was just a metro rail system company since 1977 and their national railway company was the Kowloon-Canton Railway or well known as KCR operating suburban trains and intercities as sharing with the Ministry Of Railways (MOR) of Mainland China. - It was run by Triad gangs such as the 14K and Sun Yee On - It was one of the world's largest opium producing centres. - It was well known for it's cheap, unlicensed doctors and dentists. - Criminals in Hong Kong would make a run for the Walled City as they knew the police wouldn't follow them in. - KWC was known for it's prostitution. - Although the Walled City was renown for its criminal activity, most residents were not involved in any crime and lived normal lives. - There was constant running water everywhere I went from leaking pipes and aircons. This was filmed on a hot, sunny day. - Numerous small factories and businesses thrived inside the Walled City. The famous, top quality Hong Kong copies were manufactured here. - In Hong Kong it was illegal to eat cats and dogs but in KWC there were restaurants that specialised. - The city didn't get running water until the 1960's. Even then it was diverted to triad run businesses so most people never got it. - A few of the streets were illuminated by fluorescent lights but most were too dark for me to film. - On upper levels there was a network of staircases and passageways which was so extensive that residents could travel north to south across the city without ever touching the ground. - In 1993 the Walled City was demolished and replaced by a commemorative park.

https://www.expedia.com/Hong-Kong.d178263.Destination-Travel-Guides Hong Kong, a former British territory, is one of the most densely populated places in China and in the world. You’ll find quiet neighborhoods full of temples and a dazzling skyline loaded with shopping and dining opportunities. Your Hong Kong tour must include visits to the many religious sites scattered around the city, where incense wafts from shrines and monasteries take over entire hillsides. You’ll have a marvelous time shopping in tax-free Hong Kong, where you’ll be able to find clothing, jewelry, furniture, and everything else under the sun. Don’t forget about Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, which overlooks the stunning Victoria Harbor. From there, your Hong Kong sightseeing may detour to Central, the city’s main business district, which looks like something out of a sci-fi film. The observation deck atop the International Commerce Centre will show you fantastic views of the city. Hong Kong isn’t all cityscape, of course; there are many gardens, parks, and other green spaces for you to explore. You’ll also find beaches, national parks, and quiet islands for you to indulge in natural beauty and serenity. This city truly has everything. Alan Wicker enters the Kowloon Walled City and is taken on a tour by Australian Ted Brown, and also visits the drug rehabilitation center ran by Jackie Pullinger and her team of friends, there is also an interview with Jackie Pullinger and her stories she has to tell. Surely when he's interviewing the girl called Anne he asks her how she gets her food seeing as they don't earn any money as the work is voluntary her answer is God provides, I guess all he could do was blink and carry on. I gather he came prepared for his visit and he was good at his job, but the girls didn't seem very keen. Plus it's hard to get answers out of people when they give you answers like that, I take it she just didn't want to tell him where they get the money to eat. Nevertheless, still worth a watch.

Hong Kong Travel Video including some of the top things to do in Hong Kong along with the best attractions in Hong Kong, China. Hong Kong is one of the most dynamic cities in all of Asia. From a travel perspective it offers numerous diverse options worth exploring. Whether one is exploring Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, Victoria Harbor or the New Territories, there are plenty of attractions to cover. Overlooking Victoria Harbour, this area has been modeled after the Hollywood Walk of Fame championing all of the celebrities involved in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. None is more famous than the Bruce Lee statue. This is also the perfect place to watch A Symphony of Lights laser show which happens daily at 8 pm. 2) Afternoon High Tea at the Peninsula Sitting down for afternoon tea at the Peninsula is one of the more posh activities in Hong Kong. Expect to wait in line (we waited over 2 hours) for a table. You can get complete sets which include assorted finger food along with a drink. This is definitely not a budget activity. 3) Views of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak and Tram Ride (太平山) Taking a tram ride up to Victoria Peak to experience the best vantage point of Hong Kong, Kowloon and Victoria Harbor is one of the top attractions in the city. Many come at night; however, we recommend coming in the afternoon on a weekday when you can enjoy having more personal space. 4) Star Ferry boat ride (天星小輪) There are many different modes of transportation in Hong Kong; however, none are quite as authentic of an experience as taking Star Ferry from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon or vice versa. It's one of the cheapest ways to get around. 5) Junk Boat Ride Taking a Junk boat ride around Victoria harbor offers some of the best views of the city. It's especially popular at night to take in A Symphony of Lights performance. 6) Hong Kong Park and Tea Appreciation Ceremony (香港公園) To get away from all of the hustle and bustle check out Hong Kong Park for a tranquil escape. If you have time participate in a Chinese tea appreciation ceremony. 7) Sampan Boat Tour in Aberdeen (舢舨) Taking a ride on a traditional Sampan boat allows you to experience what life is like for Chinese fishermen. 8) Eating Dim Sum (點心 - 点心) One should not leave Hong Kong without first trying dim sum. These small sized bites are treats that are accompanied by a pot of Chinese tea. 9) Taking a night bus tour of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Taking a night bus tour allows you to visit distinct areas in both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon such as Mong Kok and Causeway Bay. Make sure Marshall is equipped with the sniper, since the level will start off with him being alone Make your way around the corner. Aim for the head of the lone guard. Then quickly go around the corner and take out the other guard. Aim for the head to get the headshot and accuracy medal, plus it’ll give you extra XP for the XP medal. Take out the guard on the bottom walkway. Go down the walkway to grab the intel. Study the guards’ movement patterns, and take them out. Hide them so they won’t alert the other guards. Grab the next intel on the left on top of the stairs. After you zip line down, Reed will become available. Before meeting up with Reed, throw a grenade at the sentry to destroy it. Then peek to the left to take out the sniper on the roof. Once you make it past the sentry, use your snipers to score headshots from the enemies down the walkway. Do it quickly to score bonuses for the XP medal. Watch out for snipers before proceeding. They won’t notice you from a certain distance, so take the opportunity for a perfect headshot. In this last part, you’ll be bombarded by a turret and multiple enemies. Peek out the corner. Here, the enemies’ fire will miss you, and it’ll give you the opportunity to shoot down each enemy one by one. Grab the last intel, and head to the last objective. If you haven’t received enough bonuses for the XP medal, use the turret to fight off a wave of enemies to get the last XP you need. Otherwise, just head to the last objective. Thank you for watching, and check out more tips and walkthroughs at GamerU.
